Parting
Lu Guimeng
A hero may shed tears,
Not when parting with peers.
Sword in hand, he drinks wine,
Unlike roamers who pine.
When bitten by the snake,
He would have his wrist break.
With his career at heart,
He won’t regret to part.
This poem talks about heroic parting.

“Parting” is a poem in five lines written by Lu Guimeng, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The first couplet of this poem vividly outlines the strong and resolute character of the main character with a slick and straightforward brush. The first couplet uses the metaphor of a strong man running to the battlefield to depict the magnificent image of a great man. The neck couplet uses idioms to show the dauntless spirit of a great man who is not afraid of hardships and sacrifices. The last couplet concludes the poem by pointing out that a great man’s ambition is to build a successful career. The whole poem is a lyrical and luminous image in the midst of discussion.
