Li Qingzhao: A Faint Scent is Floating in the Cold Breeze -

A Faint Scent is Floating in the Cold Breeze

– to the tune “The Seven Ladies”

written by: Li Qingzhao / Anonymous

English translation: Julia Min

A faint scent is floating in the cold breeze

from the blooming plum-trees by the stream.

Her pale look resembles the apricot blossom,

but she is the first bloom favoured by Spring.

For her courage to stand the frost and wind,

I paint the flower between my eyebrows,

and wear a fresh one on temple hair-bun, –

the best finish for my jade-like complexion.

Appreciation:

This Ci poem is published under Li Qingzhao in some versions, but others have it under ‘Anonymous’. It could be written in her younger days in the capital or in Qingzhou if it were confirmed as a piece written by Yi’an.
