Xu Hun Poem: Passing by the Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty –

Passing by the Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty

Xu Hun

The dragon coils and tiger crouches amid the trees;

The sky-scraping imperial tomb can’t but fall down.

The hill’s still green with grass when blows the autumn breeze,

But the passers-by worship only the new crown.

The imperial tomb was built in 210 BC.

The poem “Passing by the Tomb of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty” is a seven-line poem written by Xu Hun, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. The poem is thick and flavorful, reflecting the author’s resentment against the brutal ruler and his nostalgia for the humble and benevolent ruler through contrasting techniques to suppress and improve the historical figures.
