The Bamboo Hut

Wang Wei

Sitting among bamboos alone,

I play on lute and croon carefree.

In the deep woods where I’m unknown,

Only the bright moon peeps at me.

This quatrain describes the communion of a solitary lutist with nature, that is, the solitary moon and a solitary bamboo grove.

The poem “Zhuli Pavilion” is a poem by Wang Wei, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. It depicts the leisurely life of a hermit, sitting alone under the moon, playing the qin and whistling. The poem is simple and elegant, conveying the poet’s tranquil and indifferent mood and expressing the realm of tranquility and elegance. Although the poem is only twenty words long, it has scenery and emotion, sound and color, stillness and movement, reality and emptiness, and the unity of opposites, making it an excellent expression of the poet’s attitude toward life and the characteristics of his works. This poem has been selected many times for inclusion in different language textbooks.
