Given to Scholar Pei Di During Leisure at Wang River

Wang Chuan Xian Ju Zeng Pei Xiu Cai Di

Han shan zhuan cang cui
Qiu shui ri chan yuan.
Yi zhang chai men wai
Lin feng ting mu chan.

Du tou yu luo ri
Xu li shang gu yan.
Fu zhi jie yu zui
Kuang ge wu liu qian.

Given as a Present to Scholar Pei Di During Leisure at Wang River

Cold mountains change from a dark green
Slow flowing autumn waters murmur.
Leaning against a cane outside the bramble gate
As a wind arrives, I hear the sunset cicadas.

Remnants of the setting sun at the ferry crossing
Inside the village, just one rising plume of smoke.
Here is another round of being drunk like a Jieyu
Madly singing in front of Five Willows.

Notes:

Jieyu: An imperial consort holding the third rank within a system that has a total of eight ranks. Also known as the “Recipient from the Inner Chambers.”

Five Willows: Code name for Tao Yuanming, who famously wrote a poem about himself titled, “Five Willows Gentlemen”. This poem and information about Tao can also be found on this website.
