At age twenty your brush and writing under control
By thirty you had finished reading the classics.
Invited by special decree to serve in many districts
Your fame goes beyond national borders.
You began with service for a staff officer at a general’s headquarters
Now you attend to General Yao’s army.
Again and again we met each other in late evenings
Too often our discussions were hurried.
Many times your travels took you far away
Separating rivers and roads get smaller and smaller.
Climb a tall mountain, gaze into the distance all the way to ancient Yan lands
Daily sunsets, summer clouds emerge.
Your commander owns a lot of armor and trains his troops well
He promises to clean up the smells of corruption.
Your good fortune to be both a Confucian intellectual and a holder of battleaxes
And to help the general provide meritorious service.
Without words you show me how busy you are writing important documents
